Welcome to Gastrodiplomacy!

My name is Dr. Wantanee Suntikul. I am an Associate Professor in Hospitality Management at the Business & Law Department at the University of Cincinnati, Clermont College, Ohio, USA.

I have been passionate about food all of my life, ever since growing up helping my grandad catching fish on a peaceful lake in the Northeastern part of Thailand and cooking delicious Thai food with my mother. By the age of six, I had already mastered green curry and papaya salad!

Today, I have turned my passion into a career. I have always been fascinated by the role of food in culture, society and politics, and I have tried to marry my love of food with my academic work.

Food has historically linked people across cultural and geographical distance. The diplomatic dimension of both food and tourism have long been acknowledged and studied. Food can be a tool to promote peace and cultural understanding. This is the realm of "gastrodiplomacy".

I would like to use this website to share with you my own research articles and the latest news related to gastrodiplomacy, and to promote ethical restaurants and gastronomy-related organisations around the world that use food as a platform to promote cultural understanding.

There are a growing number of such restaurants and organisations that promote the causes of peace and equity through food, and provide benefits to disadvantaged groups. Please seek out and patronise these institutions in your travels and at home. In the future, I intend to develop a country-by-country list of such restaurants for your reference.

I hope you enjoy this website and are stimulated to learn more. Bon appétit
